Marlon Brando falleció el 1 de julio de 2004 a los 80 años en unas condiciones que muy poco tenían que ver con el éxito que había conseguido a lo largo de su trayectoria artística, en la que participó en cerca de 40 películas.
Durantr su larga carrera cinematográfica, destacan actuaciones antológicas como la de Don Vito en El Padrino, de Francis Ford Coppola, o la del boxeador Terry Malloy en "On the Waterfront"(1954), de Elia Kazan, con las que consiguió un Oscar.
Brando nació en Omaha, en el estado de Nebraska (Estados Unidos), el 3 de abril de 1924. Su madre era actriz de profesión y durante su niñez vivió en varios lugares hasta que su familia se asentó en Libertyville, donde pasó su adolescencia. Comenzó con la práctica del atletismo y destacó como jugador de rugby, pero una lesión de menisco le llevó a abandonar este deporte.
Antes de ayudar a su padre en la fábrica de insecticidas de la que era propietario, decidió trasladarse a Nueva York para probar suerte en el arte de la interpretación, profesión a la que se dedicaban su madre y dos hermanas. Fue en la escuela dramática de Piscator donde entró en contacto con el mundo del cine y allí aprendió las técnicas de la interpretación, mediante el famoso método de Stalinslavski.
Su carrera arrancó en 1944 y, a pesar de no gustar a muchos por su imponente físico, su rostro logró convencer a varios productores y comenzó así una larga y fructífera carrera.
Entre sus primeras películas sobresalen Un tranvía llamado deseo (1951), La ley del silencio (1954) y ¡Viva Zapata! (1952), de de Elia Kazan, Rebelión a bordo (1962), de Lewis Milestone, o Julio César (1953), de Joseph L. Mankiewicz, entre otras.
PÉRDIDA DE POPULARIDAD
En la década de los sesenta empezó a perder popularidad entre el público. A esta época pertenecen obras como La Jauría Humana, antes de que Francis Ford Coppola le diera la oportunidad de lucirse con el papel de Vito Corleone en El Padrino (1972). En esta cinta Brando demostró de nuevo sus grandes dotes interpretativas, hasta el punto de que Coppola volvió a contar con él para Apocalypse Now (1979), donde interpretó el megalómano Coronel Kurtz.
Otra de los filmes que rodó en esta época y provocó una fuerte atracción entre el público fue El último tango en París (1972), de Bernardo Bertolucci, película que estuvo prohibida en España. En los años 80 anunció su retirada, aunque continuó apareciendo en algunas producciones, como Un golpe maestro (2001), en la que trabajó junto a Robert de Niro y Edward Norton.
